In May 2009, MK Israel Beitenu’s David Rotem created a controversy in deposing a bill on Knesset agenda requiring that those who wish to retain Israeli citizenship would have to declare their loyalty to Israel as a Jewish State. The ministers rejected this bill because it would harm the feelings of the non-Jewish citizens of Israel.
